How would the rings of Saturn be different if Saturn had no moons?

How would the rings of Saturn be different if Saturn had no moons (yet somehow still had rings anyway)? Explain two reasons for the differences.

- Some of the moons act like "shepherds". These are moons orbiting near the outer edges of rings or in gaps. The gravity of shepherd moons results in sharp edges to the ring, as material that drifts too close to the moon’s orbit is deflected back, ejected or accreted by the moon.

- Sometimes moons supply material to the rings, either by tidal forces or collisions of the moon with ring particles. Here is a famous photo from the Cassini mission where Enceladus is doing just that: http://www.agnld.uni-potsdam.de/~jschmidt/PlumeModel/EnceladusInTorus.jpg

What is the difference between engagement and wedding rings?

Posted by admin on May 29th, 2010 and filed under rings | 5 Comments »

Are they actually separate or do the engagement rings become the wedding rings? Also, guys give rings to girls, but does it go the other way too? Or does the guy get both? And do the rings have to match? Or is the guys ring different? Do wedding rings have to be like gold or diamonds?

An engagement ring (usually a diamond in the US) is given to a woman as a promise to marry. It is like collateral for the marriage. If you break up you have to return the ring. Same as if you propose to your boyfriend and give him an engagement ring (this practice is becoming more popular).

Sometimes an engagement ring if it is a band of gold with writing on it (sometimes called a posy ring) can be used as both a wedding ring and an engagement ring, especially if the person doesn’t like to wear two rings. You can find posy rings on the internet.

A wedding ring symbolizes the actual marriage itself. That is usually a band of gold, sometimes with diamonds, sometimes not. It solidifies the union itself.

Rings do not have to match. It is up to the individual couple on what they prefer.

After the marriage if you divorce, both rings are yours forever because you went through with the marriage.

How do I properly exchange wedding rings if bride has a band set?

Posted by admin on May 26th, 2010 and filed under rings | 12 Comments »

My soon to be wife’s wedding ring is a 2 piece set: engagement ring and a wedding band. How do I exchange rings during the ceremony? Should she already have the engagement ring on, and I just add the wedding band? Or should both her engagement ring and wedding band be on the ring pillow and I put both on her? If so, one at a time or simultaneously?

I’m assuming they aren’t soldered together. They are still 2 seperate pieces.
There are a couple options for the engagement ring during the ceremony.
Now, for the most part, the wedding band goes on the bottom of the finger with the engagement ring ontop (some old tradition of it being closest to your heart) So for the engagement ring:
1. She can hand it to her MOH to hold during the ceremony and put it back on right after.
2. She can put it on her right hand and put it back on the proper finger afterwards (this is what I’m doing)
3. She can leave it on and just switch them around afterwards.
4. She can put it on the ring pillow and have you put both on her hand. Personally I’m not a fan of this way because you give her the engagement ring when you propose and the wedding band when you marry. One should not be given at the opposite time. Does that wording make sense? lol

How often do slip rings fail on oil drilling rigs and how long does it take to replace the failed ring?

Posted by admin on May 20th, 2010 and filed under rings | 1 Comment »

I am interested in slip ring reliability on oil drilling platforms. What is the average cost of a failure in a slip ring? What is the time taken to replace a failed slip ring? How much do slip rings for oil drilling applications typically cost? Any information much appreciated.

Metals are by nature hard and after mixing in it with oils it slip there so avoid to use of oils while you are wearing rings………

What is the difference between a sweetheart ring and a promise ring? How many rings are supposed to be given?

Posted by admin on May 16th, 2010 and filed under rings | 6 Comments »

Ok, so my boyfriend wants to give me a promise ring, but my sister told him that first he is supposed to give me a sweetheart ring. She is saying that there are supposed to be four rings before marriage. The sweetheart ring, the promise ring, the engagement ring, and then the wedding bands.

Sweetheart and promise rings are just made up marketing things. There is no tradition of having 4 rings before marriage. People used to only get wedding bands only not so long ago and no engagement ring. If he wants to give you a promise ring, go for it, but that is for sure just a thing that high school students do, not adults. Forget about sweetheart rings, LOL.
