Analysis - April 27, 2007:
The graph shows a major difference of price between the US and Europe: gold on US servers can be almost 5 times more expensive. However, the gap seems to decrease a little bit since the release of The Burning Crusade.

As of today, there’s no reason to believe that this difference is due to macroeconomic factors. The standards of living are very similar in Western Europe and in the US, and anyway, most of the suppliers are working from Asia. Therefore, the cost of farming is exactly the same for these two regions of the world. After all, a chinese farmer will be paid the same amount to farm 1 hour in US servers or in Euro servers.

This huge gap could be due to internal policy at Blizzard. In May 2006, Blizzard announced that they had closed 30 000 accounts and removed 30 million gold from the game. Surprisingly, this announcement was only made on the US website. In December 2006, it was 105 000 accounts and 12 million gold. Even if the information was published on both US and Euro websites, it seems that US players have been more targeted than Europeans. Or at least, they publicly showed their disapproval on many web sites whereas Europeans have been very quiet. Therefore, if the prices are so expensive in the US, it’s probably because Blizzard US has a more aggressive policy against farmers. More accounts are banned in the US, which means that the suppliers have to constantly start new characters to produce gold. They also have to build more sophisticated supply chains to avoid detection (that is more complicated ways to transfer the money). These two elements definitely have a huge impact on the average cost of production of gold for US servers.
